X does not publish its exact fold rules. The default cut is 280 characters at a word boundary, the usual point where long posts show "Show more". Image crops follow the standard timeline grid. Treat it as a close approximation.
How it works
Where X cuts long posts
Long posts from Premium accounts show the first part in the timeline and hide the rest behind Show more. X does not publish the exact rule. This tool cuts at about 280 characters on a word boundary, and you can move the cut point in the settings.
How images get cropped
One image keeps its own shape within limits. Two images sit side by side, three images show one large on the left and two stacked on the right, four images form a 2x2 grid. The preview uses the same layouts.
How characters are counted
The way X counts them: every link counts as 23 characters, emoji and CJK characters count as 2, most other characters count as 1.

No. The text and images stay in your browser. Your draft is saved locally so it survives a reload.
